To Be Creative is not about spending a lot of Money to make things happen but to use your Brain to Create new ways to make people talk about you and your music. Whatever the finance you have you can make things happen. Imagination is the key.
Following my listening and viewing of Miles Copeland interview:
What is going on today ?? Brands are doing joint venture deals with record labels, artists; Music is become as a product, as my milk box. Everyday, I put some milk in my bowl and chocolate to have a hot chocolate. I have to put another brand (chocolate) in my milk. So when you addition these 2 elements you are drinking 2 products brand in one bowl. This is what you do today without being conscious about it. You consume music as a product not as an Art (you do not take time to appreciate it to know if you like it or not you consume it because they present it to you as a product you need and must buy, record labels marketing department do all their possible for that (packaging, content, ect..) very good example of artist’s marketing: Miss Rihanna.
As Miles Copeland mention in his interview, to market an artist or market yourself nowadays you must be CREATIVE. The music can be good, high quality and the artist a very good performer but if you do not use your imagination and creativity to make the artist has an impact on the audience and future fans, how the artist can be noticed among thousands of other artists and if you have the budget to realise creative ideas, as Miles Copland mentions again in his video you had all to make your ideas become real.
The Issues are some artists think about themselves as a ” Person” not as a ”Product” ,when you do business there is no feeling ”you go for it” or ” you leave it” . You have to adapt yourselves to what is going on in the market, if you do not like what is going on in the market and the projects your manager or music label propose you to do, you have to create your own ways using the opportunity offered to you (make it be in relation with your personality and your music). When the project topic or aim has an influence with the artist personality this is the sensitive point for some artists to not touch. Some artist’s wants to keep the control of their personality and beliefs that is why they do not want to be associated with some projects.
As we know Artists and Business don’t work together, but if you put the creativity in the business you can make an artist understand the fact that they are not a ‘’product’’ only but their music and their Artist personality can be mixed together to create new ideas of marketing strategy.
I will advice here do not make that stop the artist or you, adapt yourselves, suggest ideas, analyse the project and see what you can imagine to make it suit your ” beliefs” and ”personality” in order to not hurt your emotional inner. Business and music are difficult to marry but if you show your creativity and think marketing you can make it and above all listen those who know the marketing business as their pocket! And want to try new adventure in relation with your music and artist profile.
You do not need to be a Superstar to do that, just use your brain and if you have the finance to make it happen make your possible to have an impact on the public, do something people do not do, be the opposite of what people do and think everyday.
Artists forget they are also there to make people dream and/or have an social impact, you are doing show business:
(show= Entertainment, Creativity, social impact) and business (solve people problem and make revenues).
